Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area is a 2,212-acre property about 9 miles north of the town of Hemingford. This is the western edge of the Sandhills District. The reservoir itself is about 1,600 acres in size, an impoundment of the Niobrara River that offers fishing, power boating (2 ramps, 2 docks, no fuel), unsupervised swimming, 4 picnic shelters, 40 tables, 29 barbecue grills, vault toilets and hiking trails. There are 14 camping pads with electrical outlets and another 40 campsites without pads or electrical outlets. There is drinking water available but no showers, no flush toilets, no dump stations.
