Scenic, Historic and Backcountry Byways in Idaho

City of Rocks Backcountry Byway

Idaho has some gorgeous scenic byways, crossing some truly beautiful countryside and leading into other-worldly landscapes. There's the high desert uplands of the Owyhee Plateau, the western slopes of the Grand Tetons, the wild and woolly forest of the St. Joe River area, the beautiful lake scenery around Lake Couer d'Alene, the deep valley views of forest and snow-capped peaks of the International Selkirk Loop, the deep canyon of Hells Canyon... the list is long and varied. This is not a state where you drive the road once and think you've seen it all. This is a state where you drive the byways to places you could spend years exploring... and you make plans to go back again and again and again.
