Blackwater Carr Unit

Blackwater Carr Unit, Blackwater Wildlife Management Area

The Blackwater Carr Unit is a less-than-600-acre piece of Blackwater River State Forest about 4 miles northwest of Holt and Highway 90. The big draw to this property is the special opportunity released-quail hunt. These are pen-raised quail being released into the wild. A permit for these hunts costs $100 for up to four people. Hunts are scheduled sixteen different days from November through February. The Carr Unit actually surrounds the Blackwater Fisheries Research and Development Center. This is a popular area for folks to watch wading birds when there's no hunting going on. Camping, trapping, fishing and frogging are not allowed on the Unit.
