Mountain Lake Wilderness is a 15,096-acre property that straddles the boundary of Virginia and West Virginia in George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. About 12,375 acres of the wilderness is in Virginia, about 2,721 acres in West Virginia. The wilderness is bisected by the Eastern Continental Divide and contains about five miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail as part of the 21 miles of developed hiking trails on the property. Elevations vary from around 2,000 feet to more than 4,000 feet. Most of the forest is composed of hardwoods with scattered stands of spruce and hemlock.

Mountain Lake itself is a private property located just outside the southwest boundary of the wilderness.
