Coronation Island Wilderness

Coronation Island Wilderness

Coronation Island Wilderness is a 19,232-acre property that includes all of Coronation Island and the Spanish Islands, a group of islands off the west coast of Prince of Wales Island. This is part of the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rainforest where it rains or snows almost every day of the year. The west side of the wilderness area is given to strong prevailing on-shore winds and a steep and rocky shoreline. There are a few small coves on the leeward side of the islands but there are no facilities, no development of any kind on any of the islands. There was a lead mine operation near Egg Harbor from about 1900 to the late 1960's but even that is collapsing back into nature.
