The story goes that while LDS Apostle Erastus Snow was riding in a buggy in the area, a whirlwind blew the top of the buggy off. "Well, that was a Hurricane. We'll name this Hurricane Hill," Snow is reported to have exclaimed.

Population growth in the Hurricane area took off in the 1970's and Hurricane has grown to the point now that is is almost attached to the nearby cities of Washington and St. George.
