Addie Peed Swearingen, a prominent Portales philanthropist, lived in Elida in the early 1900's, attending several rural schools and graduating from high school there. She went to beauty school in Roswell and then worked as a beautician for 28 years in Santa Fe. Then she returned to Elida and lived with her mother on the family ranch from 1960 to 1979. Somewhere along the way she married rancher William Swearingen and, together, they started buying mineral rights and abandoned ranch land around Eddy County back in the days before major oil and gas reserves were discovered there. Once oil and gas were discovered, well... She died in 2008 but her Addie Swearingen Foundation still provides college scholarships to assist students from Portales, Elida, Floyd and Dora in their pursuit of higher education.

The population of Elida is up about 8.7% since 2000.
