Corrales was founded along El Camino Real back in the days of the Spanish Conquistadors. The town hasn't grown a lot but it has had to fight continuously to maintain its rural character, surrounded as it is by several rapidly growing cities. On the eastern edge of the settlement is the Rio Grande Bosque, a wooded area along the Rio Grande that provides much-needed refuge for the wild animals and birds that inhabit the area.

The population of Corrales is up more than 14% since 2000.
