Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway

Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway is a 52-mile route wrapping around Rangeley Lake on State Routes 4 and 17. The centerpiece of the route is on Route 17 at Height of the Land, an overlook affording views of Mooselookmeguntic and Upper Richardson Lakes. Height of the Land is one of those points where the route crosses the upper ridgeline of the Appalachian Mountains and descends into rolling hills and valleys.

This is an area where fishermen began to come in the 1850's in search of fabled 10 and 12 pound landlocked salmon and brook trout. This is also an area where people come to search out moose... Today the area has been transformed into a four-season destination with Saddleback Ski Resort nearby. The fall foliage attracts a lot of visitors, too, as the surrounding mountains are painted in vivid reds, oranges and yellows.
